Features of Freight Rail Transport

What is Modal shift?

Modal shift refers to the transition of freight transportation from trucks to railways or ships, which have a lower environmental impact.
JR Freight is promoting a modal shift to rail by making use of the features of rail transport, such as large volume, punctuality, and environmental friendliness.

Features of Freight Rail Transport

Able to transport large volume over long distances at once

The capacity of 26-wagon freight train is equivalent to the capacity of 65 10-ton trucks, and because it is possible to transport large volume at once, it helps to address concerns about the shortage of long-distance truck drivers. Moreover, with its high transport efficiency, the longer the distance, the lower the transport cost becomes.

  1. On time Transport

Freight trains operate at determined driving speed and scheduled timetable. Rail transport is also free of road congestion, making it the optimal mode of transport for planned shipments.

Network across Japan

There are approximately 140 container freight stations across Japan. Each day, about 500 trains are operating to transport cargo in every region across Japan with a total of 190,000 kilometers distance travelled. That is equivalent to travelling about 5 times around the Earth!

Able to use Based on your needs

• Shipping is available from just one container.
• Personal use, such as for moving, is also increasing.
• “Carload transport" using special wagons, so we can handle any type of cargo.
• One-way transport is also possible, so there are no unnecessary costs.

Environmentally friendly

CO₂ (carbon dioxide) is one of the causes of global warming.
Compared to other transport modes, rail transport has the least environmental impact, with CO₂ emissions per unit of transport being about one-eleventh of commercial truck.

With Act of Partial Revision of the Act on Rationalizing Energy Use , more attention are drawn to the use of freight rail transport.

The Eco Rail Mark is a mark indicating that the product and company has been actively utilizing environmentally friendly rail freight rail transport.
